Good Afternoon Everyone,

I wanted to send this email out to introduce myself to all of the members of GlobalEquityReport.com. As of today I have taken over as owner of the site and all of its daily operations. I understand that the past year has been up and down with some of the companies profiled on the site. I just took a look at the past companies that were profiled and the former owners definitely profiled some huge winning picks and also profiled a lot of companies that went on to decline in value.

Nobody is ever 100% right all of the time. The obvious goal is to have more winners than losers and keep your trading account in the black.

The question is how am I going to do that?????

I have hired a team of 3 people to work with me in attempt to find the hottest plays in the market right now. I have over 15 years experience in the markets and have had substantial success day trading. I have put together a formula while evaluating companies in which I break down the management team, sector of operation, potential / products & services and recent news. While most small cap companies are news driven I will be constantly scanning companies that I feel are undervalued and have hinted at upcoming news announcements. I will only profile companies that I feel are going to be worth putting on your screen and watching.

Keep in mind that penny stocks are extremely speculative and carry a high degree of risk. Never invest more that you can afford to lose. I have seen companies get wiped out over night with no indication.

With that being said, put RPC on your screen right away. I know that the previous owners mentioned this one. RPC is a well known company. Thestreet.com rated RPC the #4 small cap company of the year. I am constantly watching this one. The chart looks great and it looks like it has the potential to move. RPC is currently sitting at 1.01 and is extremely liquid for a small cap. It is definitely worth watching. If you look at the 6 month chart you will see what I am talking about. This is an exciting company. I obviously want to impress on my first profile.

MORE ABOUT Radient Pharmaceutical (AMEX: RPC)

Radient Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a pharmaceutical company, engages in the research, development, manufacture, and marketing of diagnostic and skin care products. It offers ONKO-SURE, a proprietary in-vitro diagnostic cancer test, which is used for the detection and/or monitoring of lung, breast, stomach, liver, colon, rectal, ovarian, esophageal, cervical, trophoblastic, thyroid, malignant lymphoma, and pancreatic cancers.
Penny stocks can often spike (or drop) based on the slightest provocation, even if that driving factor is of little significance. Pretend that a change in CEO seems like a great turn of events for an anxious trader, who disliked the old CEO. The investor dives into the market for $10,000 worth of shares, which could result in a 50% leap in share prices because of the buying pressure. However, the new CEO may not be enough to justify a 50% increase in the overall value and market cap of the corporation. Part of the process is to understand which driving factors are accurately priced into the shares. If you do not share our exuberant investor’s faith in the new CEO, you may want to take this opportunity to exit your position and take profits as the stock spikes 50% higher.

For the purposes of understanding Penny Stocks, I will treat any share that trades under $2.00 as a penny stock. Strangely, there is no official
definition for penny stocks. There are three different criteria that various individuals and organizations use to define penny stocks. What is considered a penny stock really depends with whom you are dealing.
Penny stocks can be defined by:

1. Price Per Share: Sometimes any shares that trade under a certain price are considered to be penny stocks. For example, the SEC considers all stocks that trade for less than $5.00 per share to be penny stock. Different individuals and organizations have their own cut-off.

2. Market the Stock Trades on: In some schools of thought, any shares that trade on a certain market (i.e. the OTC-BB, or the OTC, or the ‘Pink Sheets,’ or the CDNX) are treated as, or considered to be, penny stocks.

3. Market Capitalization: Market cap is simply the total trading value of the entire company. The value of each share of a stock, multiplied by the total number of shares outstanding, equals the market cap.

For example, 12,343,000 shares of ABC at $0.29 each gives ABC Corp. a market cap of $3,579,470 (12,343,000 shares times $0.29 per share = $3,579,470). That is kind of like saying that the company’s total
value is 3.5 million dollars. In some cases, organizations or individuals will treat any company beneath a certain market cap (for example, less than $10 million) as a penny stock. Interestingly, using option 1 or 3, a company can have its shares change in price moment by moment, and may drop in or out of the definition of ‘penny stock‘ over time. What may be a “penny stock” when the market open in the morning, may not be a penny stock by noon.

In some cases the definition of penny stock is generated by a combination of the above criteria. For example, any stock trading on the OTC-BB with a market cap of less than $20 million is considered a penny stock.

Penny Stock Trading

As you review the following differences between penny stocks and “blue-chip” equities, you may be able to see why professional analysts and institutional investors usually shy away from these speculative shares.

The kind of money that the big players use could crack the backs of many of these penny stock companies. There would not be enough volume on the other side of their trades to enable the transaction, because some penny stocks often trade only a few thousand dollars worth per day.

The negative connotation towards penny stocks among financial industry insiders needs to be kept in context. Sure, these investments are often low-volume, inexpensive shares of unproven companies. However, that is the beauty of penny stocks, and is partly why you can acquire such potentially rewarding stocks at such bargain prices.

As well, the lack of institutional interest is one of the keys to our methodology of picking winning penny stocks. Getting involved early, then holding on as the company gets discovered and explodes in price, is partly dependent upon the previously unknown company suddenly gaining interest from bigger players.

Speculation
Speculation is based on penny stock companies having lower available information about their operations, minimal revenues, unproven management, and often an unproven product or industry.

A big-name company like General Electric or Ford Motors will have very little speculative value. In other words, you will probably not make hundreds of percentage points on your shares, but instead would be happy with returns of 10% to 20% per year.

In some cases, traders even use large-cap stocks to hedge or protect their portfolios, out-perform the market, preserve their capital, or diversify their exposure.

On the other hand, trading penny stocks with hopes of selling when you have realized a 20% gain might be folly. Penny stocks make their gains by the hundreds of percentages, and thousands, not by the tens.

There are many bad investments in the penny stock field, so the best way to succeed is by isolating those with superior speculative value. The chance of buying into shares of the company that could multiply 10 or 20 or 50 times in price is the whole idea of speculation.
Value and Predictability Large-cap companies usually have more predictable revenues and earnings. Many analysts and investors
follow the companies, so that day to day events are quickly factored into the share price, and the stock often reflects a pretty accurate ‘worth.’

Investing in Gold

Gold continued its record-breaking climb in global markets Wednesday, after settling at an all-time high during volatile trading the day before.

What prices are doing: Gold for June delivery was up as much as $25.10, or about 2% before U.S. markets opened, putting the precious metal at a new intra-day high of $1,245.40 an ounce. It eased to $1,240.80, up $20.50.

It reached its previous intra-day high, $1,226.10, on Dec. 3, 2009.

What’s moving the market: Uneasiness about a volatile stock market is a boom for the precious metal, which is considered a safe-haven investment in times of economic uncertainty. On the day of the stock market’s so-called “flash crash” last week, gold rallied 2%, settling at $1,197.30.

Choppy trading since then has further boosted the metal’s upward momentum, as gold went on to settle at a new all-time high of $1,220.30 on Tuesday.

Concerns about the European debt crisis, which have kept markets seesawing since the Dow’s near 1,000-point drop last Thursday, have amplified uncertainties about a global economic recovery. In turn, that has boosted the appeal of tangible commodities over paper currencies or equities, which are seen as higher risk, analysts said.

Investors are also wary that Europe’s nearly $1 trillion rescue package announced over the weekend will speed up inflation and weaken the euro, analysts saidy.

What analysts are saying: Jeffrey Nichols, managing director of American Precious Metals Advisors and senior economic adviser to Rosland Capital, has for the last year predicted that gold would reach a new high by the middle of 2010. He expects gold to continue its upward trend and reach a $1,500 high by the end of the year.

Stock Market Timing

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know:

•World markets are somewhat higher in overnight trading as confidence begins to seep back into the system due to the ECB led European bailout. Gold continues to rise, notably, and is now above $1,240.

•The head of the IMF has called for the eurozone to do more than just bailout its fringe and instead bring budgets together and expand integration within the area. Transfers between states are just one solution to the problem, according to Strauss-Kahn.

•Morgan Stanley is under criminal investigation for CDO deals it arranged prior to the financial crisis. The investigation is into a similar type of instrument and deal as the Goldman Sachs ABACUS transaction.

•Property prices in China are finally starting to be impacted by the government’s tightening measures. Sale prices of Beijing properties fell 31% from the first week of April to the first week of May. See why China’s real estate bubble is the most obvious ever.

•Corporate access to debt financing has hit a troubled patch as investors look to move into emerging market debt and suddenly more solid sovereigns. Debt issuance has dropped 62% since last month. See why small businesses don’t have much confidence in this recovery

•Amazing. Basically every single major bank (Citigroup, Goldman, JPMorgan, and Bank of America) had a perfect trading quarter in Q1.

•The UK’s new government is starting to take shape and there is a proper coalition, with Prime Minister David Cameron sharing seats in his cabinet with both Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. UK debt CDS has fallen, a clear sign that sentiment around the new government is confident in markets.

•Deutsche Telekom, with American subsidiary T-Mobile, has reported positive Q1 results with the company bringing a net profit of €787 million, bettering a loss in the same period a year ago. Sales, however, declined during the period.

•A Libyan airplane has crashed flying from South Africa to Tripoli, with at least 96 found dead, leaving only one Dutch child as a survivor. The plane was trying to land at the time of the accident.

•Thai stability remains on the brink with protesters in the city of Bangkok set to have their water supply cut off if they don’t depart the city by midnight. The government has threatened the use of force to remove the protesters. Don’t miss our complete guide to the protests here.

Randall Chase, AP Business Writer, On Wednesday April 21, 2010, 2:31 pm EDT

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A bankruptcy judge on Wednesday cleared the way for Washington Mutual Inc. shareholders to take legal action to force the company to hold a long overdue annual meeting.

Ruling on a motion filed in Delaware by Washington Mutual’s official committee of equity security holders, Judge Mary Walrath said the automatic halt to litigation that applies to companies in bankruptcy cannot bar shareholders from exercising their corporate governance rights.

Rejecting the company’s arguments, Walrath said it is “well-settled law” that shareholders can hold meetings to elect new directors despite a company being in bankruptcy.

The shareholders want a judge in Washington state to order WMI to hold an annual meeting so that they can elect new board members. The company hasn’t held a shareholders meeting since April 2008, five months before it filed for bankruptcy protection after the largest bank failure in U.S. history.

The shareholders argue that the failure to hold a meeting violates both Washington law and the company’s bylaws. They complain that the same officials responsible for WaMu’s failure are still controlling the company and making decisions regarding its bankruptcy case.

“They simply want to exercise their corporate governance rights,” said Stephen Susman, an attorney for the equity holders committee.

The equity committee alleges that the current WMI board is resisting the election of new directors who would protect shareholder interests in the company’s reorganization plan and the related settlement of a $4 billion dispute with JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

Washington Mutual attorney Brian Rosen argued that the shareholders, who stand to get nothing under WMI’s Chapter 11 reorganization, were abusing the bankruptcy process and were trying to sabotage the reorganization plan filed last month, roughly a year and a half after WMI sought bankruptcy protection.

“It is clear that the equity committee has its own scuttling agenda,” Rosen said. “They want to dismantle the 19 months of work … and to rebuild the wheel.”

Walrath said the fact that shareholders are fighting for a better deal or more bargaining power doesn’t amount to abuse of the bankruptcy process.

“I think it’s clear from the case law that you need more than just the fact that the shareholders disagree with what the debtors have done,” the judge said, noting that the shareholders had taken action to force an annual meeting before WMI filed its reorganization plan.

“I just don’t find any basis for abuse here,” she concluded.

Susman said the shareholders would go to court in Washington on Thursday asking a judge there to order the convening of an annual meeting.

“It’s our hope that we can get this done as soon as possible,” said equity committee chairman Michael Willingham, who testified that he bought more than a million shares of WMI last year after its bankruptcy filing.

Susman said the proposed settlement with JPMorgan and the FDIC remains of great concern to equity holders, who plan to seek the appointment of an independent examiner in the bankruptcy case.

The FDIC seized Washington Mutual’s flagship bank in 2008 and sold its assets to JPMorgan for $1.9 billion. The sale resulted in the two banking companies and the government agency trading lawsuits over roughly $4 billion in disputed deposit accounts.

In a proposed settlement of the competing lawsuits, JPMorgan has agreed to turn over the $4 billion in disputed deposit accounts to Washington Mutual in return for 70 percent of the tax refunds expected from WaMu’s prior operating losses, which are valued at about $3 billion.

WaMu would get about 40 percent of the tax refunds resulting from a second round of operating losses, which are valued at about $2.6 billion. The remaining 60 percent would go to the FDIC.

“The legal claims of the debtors that would be released by the settlement are among the most valuable assets of the debtors,” Susman said. “This is not the time to shoo away the owners of the company.”

Rosen, the WMI attorney, said the equity holders don’t like the settlement because they believe “there is more money to be milked from JPMorgan Chase.”

(Fortune) — Don Blankenship, CEO of Massey Energy, has a lot of explaining to do this week. His company owns the Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, W.Va., site of the most fatal mining disaster in decades. Even though the cause of Monday’s explosion, which claimed 25 lives, has yet to be determined, questions are already flying about the coal company’s safety standards.

By chance, I met with Blankenship just days before the accident as he was passing through Washington. Massey’s public relations firm suggested the meeting, and I was curious whether his personality would match his professional reputation.

Facebook Digg Twitter Buzz Up! Email Print Comment on this story

Blankenship has long been unpopular with environmental groups who say the company’s mountaintop mining methods are destroying the Appalachia region. Blankenship in turn has not hidden his disdain — for them or for the climate legislation they stand for.

Yet, for a man who penned an op-ed last fall with the headline “No harm from cap-and-trade? You lie!” Blankenship is remarkably soft-spoken and delivers his critical bombs in a near-monotone.

Asked about the company’s long list of enemies and critics, Blankenship said that Massey (MEE) gets flack, because it’s “the largest and least politically correct.” Its labor force is 97% non-unionized, which he says makes it a target of the labor left. (AFL-CIO has declaimed Massey’s safety violations this week.)

Even though he’s unpopular with labor and environmental constituencies among Democrats, Blankenship’s political views aren’t neatly aligned with either party. He’s against cap-and-trade, but he also resents free trade, arguing that not enough attention is being paid to protecting the interests of U.S. companies.

In our conversation, Blankenship displayed a streak of stubbornness. He had harsh words for the various trade associations that represent Massey to Washington, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Mining Association. He accused them of being too focused on political maneuvering rather than defending their core principles. “Most of the time, they’re too compromising,” he said.

Likewise he’s holding his ground on this mining accident, in spite of reports that the Mine Safety and Health Administration recently fined the company for violations related to ventilation that control methane. In today’s Wall Street Journal, Massey denied that Upper Big Branch Mine had any safety problems. “The safety record in the past three months had been really, really good,” he told the Journal.

Before we finished talking, I asked Blankenship how often he comes to Washington. He said he used to come only a few times a year but expects to be visiting the capital at least a dozen times in 2010 because of all the issues affecting Massey. That schedule might be something Blankenship revises. After all, mining accidents like this one are just the sort of thing that lawmakers love holding hearings on.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are falling on renewed concerns grew about Greece’s debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrials have pulled back from the 11,000 level Wednesday after failing to cross it the past two days. The Dow hasn’t been above 11,000 in 18 months.

Investors are concerned that Greece won’t be able to fix its financial troubles. Greece’s borrowing costs remain higher as the country’s finance minister seeks advice from an International Monetary Fund team on how to speed fiscal reforms.

At midday, the Dow is down 36 at 10,934. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is down 4 at 1,186. The Nasdaq composite index is down 2 at 2,435.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell Wednesday after concerns grew about Greece’s debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrials remained just below 11,000 for a third day. The Dow hasn’t crossed that level in 18 months.

No major economic reports were due out Wednesday, but investors were awaiting the results due in the early afternoon from an auction of 10-year Treasury notes. European markets were lower on concerns about Greece.

Greece’s borrowing costs remained high Tuesday and its stock market fell as the country’s finance minister sought advice from an International Monetary Fund team on how to speed up fiscal reforms.

The Dow has been flirting with the 11,000 level all week, but has yet to top the psychological barrier. It came within 12 points both Monday and Tuesday but ended just below there on both days.

Stocks have been on a nearly unbroken climb for 13 months. The past two months’ gains have come mostly from steady, more modest moves, and not the triple-digit gains that were common early in the market’s recovery. Recent momentum is due primarily to a string of economic reports showing the economy is improving, albeit slowly.

Mark Coffelt, portfolio manager at Empiric Funds in Austin, Texas, said stocks are due for a slide after two months of steady gains but that any drop is likely to be modest because so many investors are waiting to put money in the market.

“I think it’s going to be pretty light as much of the public is underinvested,” Coffelt said.

In late morning trading Wednesday, the Dow fell 32.34, or 0.3 percent, to 10,937.65. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.88, or 0.2 percent, to 1,186.55, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 0.32, or less than 0.1 percent, to 2,436.49.

The government is auctioning $21 billion in 10-year notes Wednesday. The 10-year note is used as a benchmark for many consumer loans. Bond yields have been rising in recent weeks, which has pushed interest rates higher.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite to its price, fell to 3.95 percent from 3.96 percent late Tuesday. On Monday, its yield climbed above 4 percent for only the second time since October 2008.

Rising rates have yet to have much effect on stocks. But if rates rise too fast, it could slow the economic recovery, which would put a damper on stocks. The Mortgage Bankers Association said the average rate on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages surged to 5.31 percent last week from 5.04 percent a week earlier.

The Dow hit its highest level of the day Tuesday after the Federal Reserve’s interest rate-setting committee released the minutes from its March meeting. Investors welcomed the comments that showed the Fed is upbeat about economic growth.

Fed chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to give a speech Wednesday on economic challenges. Investors will look for any clues in the speech about when the Fed might have to raise interest rates to keep inflation in check as the economy recovers.

The dollar rose against other major currencies. Gold rose slightly, while oil fell.

European markets fell. Britain’s FTSE 100 dropped 0.2 percent, Germany’s DAX index fell 0.4 percent, and France’s CAC-40 lost 0.6 percent. Investors worry that debt problems in Greece and other European countries could upend a global economic recovery.

Japan’s Nikkei stock average rose 0.1 percent. Japan’s central bank said it would hold its key interest rate steady, and it sees a recovery taking hold. Asian shares also rose after the World Bank boosted its growth forecast for developing economies in East Asia.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are falling in early trading after a steady climb had pushed the Dow Jones industrial average near 11,000 for the first time in 18 months.

There are few catalysts on the calendar likely to sway trading in the coming days. The Federal Reserve plans to release the minutes from its March 16 meeting Tuesday afternoon. The Fed kept its key rate at a historic low during the meeting to continue its easy money policy to help generate growth.

The small pullback in futures comes a day after the Dow came within 12 points of hitting 11,000.

The Dow is down 26.23, or 0.2 percent, at 10,947.32. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is down 3.00, or 0.3 percent, at 1,184.44, while the Nasdaq composite index is down 9.33, or 0.4 percent, at 2,420.20.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stock futures are falling Tuesday after a steady climb that has pushed the Dow Jones industrial average near 11,000 for the first time in 18 months.

European markets rose in their first day of trading since Thursday. They had been closed for the Easter holiday.

There are few catalysts on the calendar that are likely to sway trading in the coming days as companies prepare to begin releasing first-quarter earnings next week. The Federal Reserve plans to release the minutes from its March 16 interest rate-setting committee meeting Tuesday afternoon. The Fed kept its key rate at a historic low during the meeting to continue its easy money policy to help generate growth.

Investors are looking for signs of when the Fed might hike rates to combat eventual inflation.

The small pullback in futures comes as the Dow approaches the psychological barrier of 11,000. The Dow came within 12 points of hitting 11,000 on Monday before easing off its highs for the day. That would’ve been the first time it eclipsed that level since Sept. 29, 2008, before the credit crisis peaked.

Stocks have been rising in recent months as new reports show the economy is slowly, but consistently improving. There have been few pauses during the recent gains that have seen the Dow rise in each of the past five weeks — its longest winning streak since mid-April last year.

Ahead of the opening bell, Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 33, or 0.3 percent, to 10,876. Standard & Poor’s 500 index futures dropped 5.10, or 0.4 percent, to 1,178.00, while Nasdaq 100 index futures fell 7.00, or 0.4 percent, to 1,966.50.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 3.95 percent from 3.99 percent late Monday.

The 10-year yield climbed above 4 percent during trading Monday for the first time since June. It is approaching levels not seen since October 2008.

The Treasury Department is scheduled to auction three-year notes Tuesday afternoon. Weak demand at recent auctions, along with signs of economic recovery, have helped drive prices down and yields higher.

Major indexes advanced Monday following upbeat reports on the services sector and housing market. The two areas were hit hard during the recession, so investors welcomed the positive news by bidding up stocks.

The Institute for Supply Management said its index of activity in the nation’s service industries rose in March to a better-than-expected 55.4 from 53 in February. A reading above 50 indicates growth.

The National Association of Realtors said the number of people who agreed to buy a previously occupied home rose 8.2 percent in February from January. Economists had been predicting a slight decline.

The Dow rose 46 points, while the S&P 500 gained 9 points.

Meanwhile, the dollar rose against other major currencies Tuesday. Oil and gold both dipped.

Overseas, Japan’s Nikkei stock average fell 0.5 percent. Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.5 percent, Germany’s DAX index gained less than 0.1 percent, and France’s CAC-40 fell less than 0.1 percent.

The Dow logged its longest weekly winning streak since April of ’09 and finished its finest first quarter since ’99, back when Melrose Place was on the air and Ricky Martin in the news. (As Art Garfunkel, as astute a market maven as his more widely quoted namesakes Cashin and Hogan once remarked, “after changes upon changes we are more or less the same”.) The news wasn’t uniformly upbeat however. Whether the economy of present day Athens can survive is the $64,000 question (not including interest, obviously) — how it could do with the $64 million ancient Greece just brought in to top the weekend box office. Easter eve was all about tablets, which were impossible to pry from Charlton Heston’s “cold dead hands” in ABC’s annual airing of The Ten Commandments and compelled Apple (AAPL) aficionados to put theirs in pockets in to obtain a pricey new iPad.

With exquisite timing, The New York Times (NYT) sold a stake in the Boston Red Sox but three days before the Bronx Bombers went to Beantown to begin the baseball season. And as one dynasty in pinstripes returned, another which wore its shoulder pads proudly on its sleeve ended. Rest in Peace gentleman John Forsythe, whose ’81-’89 on air exploits overlapped exactly with the Reagan era. If only the age’s other tycoons, from Ivan to Icahn, had half his class. Today in 10:00AM Eastern economics, an increase is expected in the Institute for Supply Management’s March services index. Pending home sales for February are out at the same time and on the earnings front LoJack (LOJN) and Rehabcare (RHB) are scheduled to report results

Oil prices rose above $85 a barrel Monday, extending gains from last week as investors bet an improving U.S. job market will herald growing crude demand.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for May delivery was up 56 cents to $85.43 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, but down from a peak of $85.89 earlier in the session. On Thursday, the contract climbed up $1.11 to settle at $84.87 following a gain of $1.39 on Wednesday.

Global oil trading was closed for the Good Friday holiday.

Crude has jumped from $69 a barrel in early February on expectations a growing U.S. economy will eventually spark higher oil consumption.

On Friday, the U.S. Labor Department said employers added 162,000 jobs in March, the largest job gain in three years. The unemployment rate stayed at 9.7 percent for the third straight month.

“The market was positive before but now it’s been confirmed,” said Clarence Chu, a trader with market maker Hudson Capital Energy in Singapore. “If the job growth can be sustained for several months, we’ll definitely see crude demand pick up.”

Analysts, however, warned that the rise in oil prices caused by speculative investments could harm the recuperation of the global economy.

“The last time we had oil prices at current levels, what followed was the worse recession ever and we will worry about what the combination of what is still high unemployment and higher fuel expenditure does to the economic recovery,” said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland. “On a fundamental basis we still do not see the indicators that would justify crude oil to trade at $90 a barrel.”

“We still expect that this technical rally will start to work its way against the economic recovery,” Jakob said.

Edward Meir, senior commodity analyst at MF Global in New York, said higher oil prices were part of an overall surge in the value of commodities, with investors betting that commodity prices will benefit as the global recovery picks up steam.

“The flip side to this argument is that the rally has already discounted a recovery, and that continued gains, particularly in energy, could potentially slow growth down, increase inflation and interest rates, and in a worst case, short-circuit the very recovery markets have been banking on,” Meir said.

In the near term, nonetheless, oil prices will likely go higher.

“Technically, there is very little resistance showing on the charts given the upside breakout evident, which means that prices will likely have to define their own tops at this stage,” Meir said.

In other Nymex trading in May contracts, heating oil rose 1.43 cents to $2.2310 a gallon, and gasoline gained 1.83 cents to $2.3420 a gallon. Natural gas fell 4.2 cents to $4.044 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, Brent crude was up 36 cents at $84.37 on the ICE futures exchange.

Associated Press writer Alex Kennedy in Singapore contributed to this report.
